EATW Manifesto — Our Words Matter

At the European Association of Travel Writers (EATW), we believe in something timeless:
Stories with a soul. Journalism with integrity. And the right to control how our words are used.

In an age where AI engines train on the work of others without credit or compensation, we draw a line.
We are travel writers, editors, and publishers who say:

• No to content scraping without consent
• Yes to ethical data usage and fair licensing
• Yes to protecting our digital rights as authors
• Yes to diverse, local voices in a sea of homogenized AI output

We are not nostalgic—we're realistic. We embrace innovation, but not at the cost of ownership, livelihoods, or the richness of human storytelling. This manifesto is our first step. Together, we will advocate for policies that protect creative work, empower small publishers, and ensure that the future of travel writing isn’t algorithmically ghostwritten.

Founder: Elisabeth Jane Bertrand, founder of EATW and Dolcevia.com, has spent decades writing about travel from the hidden valleys of Garfagnana to the alleys of Genoa. A dual Dutch-American national, she brings a bilingual perspective and a fiercely independent voice to the global travel writing community. Her mission with EATW is simple: protect the craft, amplify European voices, and build a resilient future for travel storytelling.
